Arrhythmias are disorders affecting the rhythmic beating of the heart. They can occur in a healthy heart and not be serious. They can also be a sign of a serious problem. Diagnosis and treatment is important and can prevent heart disease, stroke or sudden cardiac death.

This initiative aims to increase patient access to arrhythmia services by:
  • Increasing clinical capacity
  • Providing timely access to devices through the use of care pathways, thus reducing the number of inappropriate referrals
  • Triaging patients for general consultation, leading to reduced time for assessment and investigation leading to more timely initiation of therapy

Edmonton provides support to Arrhythmia services both within and outside the Edmonton area as well as inter-provincially. During 2006/2007, Edmonton completed approximately 925 pacemaker implants including lead revisions and generator changes.  As well, approximately 250 defibrillators were inserted across the region.

Calgary provides arrhythmia services for a catchment area that includes the Calgary area, Southern Alberta, East Kootenays, and parts of Saskatchewan.  There were approximately 600 Pacemaker and 180 ICD implants performed in Calgary in 2006/2007.  8000 Pacemaker and 2200 ICD follow up visits were concluded in that same timeframe.

Calgary will focus on the development and implementation of two arrhythmia pathways. Capital is expanding clinical capacity and developed and implemented a new device booking form.

Edmonton is expanding the EASE Arrhythmia clinic to ensure timely access to arrhythmia services.
